The eldest son of John and Esther Adams, James Hume Adams was born on 6 March 1890 in Edinburgh, but grew up in Glasgow. From 1906-1908 he studied at the Glasgow Pupil Teacher’s Institute, where he followed the Junior Student Certificate course (Junior Student Certificates were introduced by the Scotch Education Department in 1906, and their holders could apply for a place at teacher training college). In his second year as a Junior Student, Adams also took an evening class in Dynamics at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College (now the University of Strathclyde).

After obtaining his Junior Student Certificate in the summer of 1908, Adams entered the University of Glasgow. In his first two years of University studies he took classes in Latin and Greek, and took French and German to Honours. A talented linguist, Adams was awarded several prizes in both French and German Language and Literature. Upon graduating from Glasgow in 1912 with a first-class MA in Modern Languages, he enrolled under the Glasgow Provincial Committee for the Training of Teachers for a one-year teacher training course. Adams completed this course in the following summer, and was officially recognised as a certificated teacher from 1 August 1913.

He then proceeded to enrol in the Faculty of Law at the University of Aberdeen, where he attended from 1913-1915. Adams assumed the position of German Master in Gordon College, Aberdeen in 1913. He was employed as the principal teacher of German there at the outbreak of war. Sadly, Adams was one of three staff who died whilst in service and did not return to his post.

James Hume Adams joined the 6th Cameron Highlanders in March 1915 and completed his training at Basingstoke. The 6th Battalion moved to France in July 1915. After only a few months’ service he was killed in action in France fighting in Battle of Loos on 26th September 1915, aged 25. Private James Hume Adams is buried and listed at the Loos Memorial which is located in the Dud Corner Cemetery near the village of Loos-en-Gohelle in France, a German strongpoint captured by the 15th (Scottish) Division on the first day of the battle. The Loos Memorial commemorates over 20,000 officers and men who have no known grave. Adams’ name is inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres.
