Cubie, John Crawford, Private, No. 202240, 5th (Territorial) Battalion, The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), 2nd son of John Pollock Cubie, 3 Whitevale Street, Dennistoun, Retired manufacturer; born 7th August 1882; educated at Whitehill Street School, Glasgow; enlisted in July 1916; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders and was killed in action at Arras, 23rd April 1917. Buried one mile east of Henin-sur-Cojeul and five and a half miles south-east of Arras. His Commanding Officer wrote: “During the few months I knew your son I got to like him very much, and whilst the work must have been pretty hard on him, he was a sticker and never had a complaint. We were in action together on 14th April and your son came through all right. I can tell you his coolness under fire opened my eyes. My brother officers and you son’s comrades join with me in tendering you deepest sympathy in your great loss”. Unmarried.
