Report from Pte T. A. Fortune, Royal Scots, No. 49927, 4 Northburn Street, off Garscube Rd., Glasgow, 26th January 1919, regarding un-official report of death: “Regarding your letter in which you ask for a report concerning the death of No. 49926, Pte. J. C. Findlay, 12th Battalion, Royal Scots, I have only got to say that the above soldier and myself were the closets chums, therefore there is no mistake as regards his identity. On the morning of the 25th April 1918, we were standing side by side firing at the enemy, when Pte. Findlay got shot through the left temple. Sergeant French was in command of the platoon certified him as dead. We carried him out of the trench to be out of the way of the traffic. As the firing was very heavy we had no time to get his pay-book or any of his belongings, nor had we time to bury him as we were captured shortly afterwards. This occurred on the 25rd April 1918 on Messines Ridge opposite the well-known Crater. This was on the left of Kemmel Wood.”
