Daily Record, 6th November 1915. ‘Heroes of Gallipoli – Scots Mentioned in Despatches’

London, Friday. The ‘London Gazette’ today contains a despatch from general Sir Ian Hamilton, dated General Headquarters, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Septmber 22, in which he submits the following additional names of members of the Force whore services during the operations described in his despatch of 26th August he considers deserving of special mention:

Howieson, Alexander, Private, No. 1417, 1/7th Battalion, The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) (T.F.), younger son of Francis Howieson, 63 Edgemont Gardens, Langside, Glasgow, Commercial Traveller, by his wife Agnes Dick, daughter of Alexander Johnston; born Shawlands, Glasgow, 31st January 1895; educated Shawlands Academy and Whitehill Higher Grade School, Glasgow; was employed as a Warehouseman with Messrs. J. & W. Campbell & Co.; joined the 7th Scottish Rifles in January 1914; volunteered for foreign service on the outbreak of was in Gallipoli from June 1915 and was killed in action there 12th July 1915, while advancing along a captured Turkish trench. Buried where he fell. Captain Blair wrote: “I am deeply sorry to lose such a good brave soldier.” And a comrade: “Alex was great, one of the bravest and best, on that famous 28 June. I watched him walking back with his message, as if on parade. The machine guns going and shells bursting on all sides, and he kept his head up and walking straight on. He was great, and every inch a soldier.” He was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 5th November 1915] by General Sir Ian Hamilton, for gallant and distinguished service in the field. Unmarried.
