De Ruvigny’s Roll of Honour (Volume 2):

MacMillan, Peter Christie, Trooper, No. 2717, Queen’s Own Royal Glasgow Imperial Yeomanry, youngest son of William MacMillan, 109 Craigpark Drive, Dennistoun, Glasgow, formerly of Southend, Campbeltown, Cashier, The Barrowfield Iron Works, Glasgow, by his wife Christina Goodfellow, daughter of Peter Christie, Muir of Alford, Aberdeenshire; born Dennistoun, Glasgow 23rd September 1893; educated Alexandra Parade and Whitehill Higher Grade Schools, Dennistoun and on leaving the latter, entered the service of Glasgow Corporation Sanitary Department under Mr. Fyfe, where he joined second line Queen’s Own Royal Glasgow Imperial Yeomanry; transferred to first line when ordered on active service; proceeded with C Squadron to Egypt, remaining on duty there several months, then to Gallipoli, where his squadron fought dismounted attached to the 7th Highland Light Infantry and was killed in action, being shot by a Turkish sniper 22nd October 1915, when coming off duty after a spell of four days in the firing line. His commanding Officer, Captain H. G. Coates, wrote: “Sapped out and took portion of Turkish trench; there was considerable tension, but operation quite successful; next night Turks counter-attacked; an officer and man were killed, but trench held; a spell in the firing line was marred by your son Peter being shot. He was a particularly nice fellow; he had been in the firing line four days and nights, and had shown great keenness and willingness to do his hard work. He was buried in the Lowland Divisional Cemetery; Presbyterian Minister held service. His personal friends in the company, General Lee, Colonel Connal and myself were also present and a wooden cross will be placed on his grave. He was extremely well liked in his company and was a very promising soldier,” and later: Since writing you I have heard many things about Peter that would gladden your heart, and his mother’s and brother’s too.” He was keen on all outdoor sports, was in his School Former Pupils’ Football and Gymnastic Clubs; St. Barnabas Football Club* and Dennistoun Cricket Club of which he was captain.
