Falkirk Herald, 7th September 1918, ‘Bonnybridge Officer Dies of Wounds – Lieutenant Allan A. Neilson, R.A.F.’

Lieutenant Allan Alfred Neilson, Royal Air Force, a native of Bonnybridge and second son of Mr. & Mrs Allan Neilson, who resided in Bonnybridge for a number of years, died from wounds sustained in action on 23rd August. The following is an extract from a letter received from his Major conveying the sad intelligence: “I deeply regret to tell you that your son, Lieutenant Allan Alfred Neilson died of wounds received in action on the 23rd August 1918. He went up at 9.55 a.m. Twice he was attacked by enemy aeroplane. The first time your son drove them off with his machine gun but the second time one machine detached itself from the others and got underneath your son’s machine and opened fire, very badly wounding him in the head. The pilot brought the machine back to the aerodrome. Your son never regained consciousness and died a few hours after. Lieutenant Neilson, who was in his 19th year, had only been in France five days and this was his first was flight. Mr. & Mrs. Neilson are at present residing at 18 Aitken Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow.
