JOHN COULL


John Coull – age 22 – Pilot Officer/Pilot (188892) 247 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

247 Squadron joined the newly formed 2nd Tactical Air Force during the summer of 1943. In June 1944, flying rocket-firing Hawker Typhoons, it began to operate from airstrips in Normandy and reached the Netherlands by the end of September. Armed reconnaissance sweeps were flown over Germany for the rest of the war, the main targets being enemy transport, railways and barges.

John was commissioned from Flight Sergeant (1559212) in November 1944. His aircraft crashed at  Lette near Munster in Germany and he was buried in Buldern but was re-interred in Rheinberg in September 1948.  (Source: London Gazette 19/1/1945 p.509, aircrewremembered.com and CWGC)
