HARRY SMITH


Henry Smith, MA – age 29 – Chaplain 4th Class (135499) Royal Army Chaplain's Department.

Attached to 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.

Educated at Whitehill School in Glasgow, at Glasgow University and at the Divinity College he was Minister of Lochend Church in Beeswing Village, Kirkcudbrightshire from 1937 until July 1940 when he became a Chaplain to the Forces. He sailed for Singapore in August 1941. He was killed in the Alexandria Hospital massacre at the fall of Singapore. As an army chaplain he chose to stay with bedridden patients when the allies were evacuating. They were bayoneted in their beds. He was killed for protesting. Commonwealth War Grave – Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore.
